Someone Else Who Doesn’t Get It

I went to get weighed in this morning and when the counselor asked me how I was feeling, I told her I have not been doing too well for the last week, but I am forcing myself to get all of my required food in.  I was talking to her about Chronic Fatigue and how it waxes and wanes and she was trying to tell me that I have total control over what my body does.  By eating healthy and losing weight, she feels they will be able to rid me of this disease!

I told her that I became ill with CFIDS when I was only 21, and I was thin then so being overweight has nothing to do with CFIDS.  Sure, you may feel worse when you are heavier, but by losing weight the disease will not go away.  Again another example of how uninformed people are.

She was also trying to say that CFIDS and FM were just a “set of symptoms brought on by not taking care of ones body”.  Again I had to correct her.  It just amazes me as to what people know, or think they know, and how off they truly are when it comes to these diseases.

Oh yes, those of us with these illnesses have a lot of teaching to do!

Horrific! Will you even consider going back? Maybe next time, come armed with articles or something to educate this person.

Well, I have to go back three times a week to get weighed in. I think I will take some info. along though to show proof of what I was trying to explain to her.

This kind of attitude is very common since most people know very little about Fibromyalgia and CFS. This is true even of many doctors. Sometimes it just takes a little education.
