Naturopathic Treatment For IC Disease

Many IC patients have chosen the naturopathic route for their treatment of IC Disease. A naturopathic treatment for IC consists of removing inflammatory and irritating foods from their diet, taking supplements, and using herbal support. Changing to a healthy diet can decrease symptoms in some patients, plus the nutritional support helps the entire body!

IC patients should try to eliminate food sensitivities that can be the cause of chronic inflammatory conditions. Use an elimination diet to find out what your food sensitivities are.

Avoid processed foods and eat fresh, unprocessed foods. Foods you should be eating include fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds, nuts, olive oil, and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut, and mackerel).

Avoid sugar, dairy products, refined foods, fried foods, junk foods, some beans (fava, lima, black, soy) and caffeine. Coffee, chocolate, alcohol, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, and tomatoes often worsen symptoms.

You should be drinking 50% of your body weight in ounces of water daily.

Supplements IC patients can take to improve symptoms include calcium citrate and bromelain. Calcium citrate decreases the acidity in the urine, so it decreases irritation to the bladder. Bromelain provides anti-inflammatory action.

As far as herbal medicines go, I have personally found Marshmallow Root to work well. My SIL, who also has IC, swears by Marshmallow Root and always has it on hand at her house. We make it into a tea but do not add sugar to it.
