The CFIDS Name Change Advisory Board has made it official that the new name for CFIDS is ME/CFS. ME standing for myalgic encephalopathy. Of course, not everyone is happy with the name change. Some people worry that because CFS is still part of the official new name our illness is being trivialized.
CFS is listed in the ICD-9-CM codes. The advisory board feared that if they took the CFS out of the name, the new name would not be recognized as an ICD-9-CM code, and this could cause problems with patients’ insurance claims and disability claims.
It will probably take years to get the CFS taken off, so for now it is referred to as ME/CFS.
