Pentosan Polysulfate (PPS), or Elmiron, is the only oral medication approved by the FDA for Interstitial Cystitis.

The majority of IC patients fail to improve and it could possibly be due to low urine and bladder concentrations of PPS. According to the article, “Its large size and high negative charge imply low gastrointestinal absorption and glomerular filtration. Only 1-2% of an oral dose may get into the urine.”
