I found some interesting information on a pamphlet, called Toxin Awareness that is published by Sound Concepts, smarttools.soundconcepts.com, 1-888-285-6320.
Cosmetics, Lotions and Haircare Products
From Cancer Prevention Coalition press release, June 17, 2002:
“Cancer and health risk experts just concluded reviews that indicate mainstream cosmetics and personal hygiene products pose the highest cancer risk exposures to the general public, higher than smoking.”
From Debra Lynn Dadd, Home Safe Home (New York; Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putnam, 1997), p. 167 – 168:
In 1989, cosmetologists were complaining of headaches, loss of balance, memory loss, asthma, nervous system damage and respiratory damage. In a government hearing on the safety of cosmetics, a House subcommittee called for the analysis of nearly 3,000 chemicals used in cosmetics. “The results were disturbing. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] studied 2,983 ingredients and found 884 to be toxic. Of the 884 toxic ingredients, biological mutations could be caused by 314, reproductive problems by 218, acute toxicity by 778, cancer tumors by 146 and skin and eye irritation by 376.”
Most skin care and hygiene products contain a common ingredient and that is mineral oil. Mineral oil is toxic to the human body. Mineral oil blocks all nutrients that are in a product and offers no nutritional value. Mineral oil will draw nutrients away from the skin.
According to the Toxin Awareness brochure, no matter how high the quality of the mineral oil a company claims to make, there isn’t any mineral oil that can be called “good mineral oil”. Mineral oil is a nonrenewable crude oil and it is hydrolyzed and hydrogenated. What this process does is plasticizes the oil and it acts like plastic in and on human skin. WIth this plastic coating on the skin, there is no way the body can effectively eliminate toxins and regulate temperature. Because these ingredients are not found in nature, the body does not know what to do with them.
Several side effects can be expected: Fatigue, memory loss, personality changes, headaches, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction.
Many cosmetics, waxes, soaps, lubricants, etc. are made with animal renderings. When I read this, I almost threw up! YUCK! When animals die, whether by being ravaged by disease, slaughtered, road kill, animals euthanized, they are sent to a rendering plant to be gotten rid of. Then the animals (bones, blood, hooves, horns, heads, intestines, etc.) are put in huge grinders, mixed together and cooked. The fatty substance that then floats to the top is scraped off and used to make the products I mentioned above. How could this possibly be good for you? When checking ingredients, look on the label for Glycerin and you can search online for other names for Glycerin. Also, some other harmful ingredients you want to look out for on your personal care products are: Mineral Oil, Petroleum-based products, Sodium Flouride, Collagen.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I have started really watching what I buy, just to see if it will make a difference. Now I have worn cosmetics for over 20 years so I am not going to see results overnight, but in time, I should notice something. I have been following the recommendations listed on the Toxin Awareness Pamphlet:
“Choose a compnay you can trust to go beyond FDA regulations”.
You will want to choose a company with health and wellness as their philosophy, mainly one that is based on natural, botanical principles.
“Choose a company that won’t use mineral oils, petroleum-derived products, paraffin wax, soluble alcohol, lanolin, phtalates, collagen and elastin of high-molecular weight, or animal products”.
LOOK FOR THESE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR PRODUCTS:
- Cucumber, Ginseng, Green Tea, Citrus, Apple, Castor Oil, Ginger, Ginkgo Biloba, Comfrey Extract, Dandelion Extract, Borage Seed Oil, Irish Moss Extract, Fennel Extract, Almond, Sunflower, Vitamins E, A and C.
PETROCHEMICALS:
Cosmetics, shampoo, body lotion, laundry detergents and softeners, furniture polish, pesticides, toothpaste, fertilizers, city water, plastic storage containers, and even some foods contain deadly ingredients.
Petrochemicals reek havoc on the nervous system and hormones.
Common Side Effects of Neurotoxins:
- Fatigue, skin irritation, personality changes, vision damage, destruction of the immune system, memory loss, headaches, sexual dysfunction, hormone problems, sleep disturbances, disease, nausea, vomiting, muscle incoordination, aches and pains. Don’t all of these symptoms sound like what we suffer from? Worth looking into, isn’t it?
THINKGS TO LOOK FOR IN A HEALTH CARE COMPANY:
- Botanically based
- pH correct
- Hypoallergenic
- Dermatologist Tested
- Never tested on animals
- Formulated without animal products or by-products
- Formulated without mineral oil
- Formulated without dyes or chemical fragrances
