Yum….how many think that smelling that wonderful aroma of hazelnut French roast coffee in the morning is just what you need to get you up and out of bed? Research has found that coffee may be doing the exact reverse – and making you want to sleep more!

Researchers in Britain have found that everyday smells like coffee can trigger feelings of fatigue, backaches, chest pain and stomach pain. The stronger the aroma, the more intense the symptoms may be.

Researchers theorize that the brain may associate the smell of coffee with a feeling you have when you drink it (ex: morning grogginess).

The Five Most Common Smells that Triggered Symptoms:

  • Hot foods
  • Paint
  • Smoke and fire
  • Coffee
  • Chemicals
