My personal journey with chronic illness has been a difficult one, but a journey that has taught me a great deal about life, understanding and compassion.
I was first diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 19 years ago at the age of 21 after a bout with either severe bronchitis or walking pneumonia.
I was a total workaholic and I was working 50+ hours a week as a manager of a small, family-owned grocery store. Because I was a workaholic, I would not take off from work to go and see a doctor to treat my upper respiratory issues.
When I think back to my childhood I always needed more rest than my brother and sister. I always needed the most sleep in the family and I was always sick. My sister was “the smart one”, my brother was “the onery one” and I was “the sick one”.
I believe that I have always had CFS, Fibromyalgia and Interstitial Cystitis and that these illnesses completely took over my body when I became very ill with the bronchitis/walking pneumonia.
I have seen many doctors over the years – more than I care to count. The majority of doctors that I saw did not want to take the time to try and figure out what causes these diseases. They just want to quickly write out a prescription for antidepressants and send you on your merry way. I heard from several physicians that I was just “lazy”, “bored” and “depressed” when in fact, I have found that most people with CFS are Type A Personalities who are perfectionists and workaholics.
The older I got, the less I was able to work. I went through many career changes over the past 17 years in hopes that there was something I could do. Two years ago, I had to completely give up my career and I have not been able to work since. My symptoms flare frequently and I never have a day where I can say that I feel good – never. Some days are better than others but none are ever normal.
But even through all of this, I have never given up hope and that hope is what keeps me going as I fight for a cure along with many others.
I am here to let you know that if you suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and/or Interstitial Cystitis, you are not alone! There are many of us who are where you are and have felt what you are feeling.
On this site, I will be sharing with you my life’s journey, what I have tried for treatments and my own personal beliefs on these chronic illnesses.
I started writing about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Interstitial Cystitis over a year ago as a means to raise awareness and to offer support to others going through the same thing. Writing has also helped me deal with my own personal issues surrounding chronic illness. I am currently in the process of moving my blog here to my own site and I am very excited about it!
If you are down because you can’t get up, help is here and I will support you however I can!
Please note that I am not a medical expert or physician. You should always consult your physician before starting any new treatments or trying anything that may be discussed here.
If you have any questions or comments on this site, or just need someone to talk to who has been there, you can email me at fighting_fatigue@hotmail.com.
